Who would have thought that little old New Mexico (we’re actually the fifth largest state, who knew?) would break down the discriminatory barriers to gay marriage in a unique way. Last week’s Taos News had the banner headline, “Taos ruling makes marriage legal for all.” There were gay weddings taking place in front of the county courthouse and many more gay couples acquired their licenses.
In a nutshell, the route to establishing marriage equality in New Mexico was very simple. State laws are somewhat ambiguous as regards who may get married. Individuals began to challenge it and judges are simply ruling that there are no grounds for discrimination based on gender. The change is coming county by county and continues to unfold. There will be a state supreme court ruling in October with the “final” answer statewide. Stay tuned …
This means gay couples can now enjoy a trip to beautiful northern New Mexico and get married. You can do so as an elopement or plan an elegant affair at one of the many suitable venues in the Taos area. Taos has long been a wedding destination offering stunning four star resorts or simple B&B garden ceremonies. As a wedding officiant I have helped couples enjoy these locations as well as meadows, trails and my own gardens. I’m delighted that I can now offer my gay brothers and sisters these same wedding celebrant services.
Creating ceremony for and officiating gay weddings is most refreshing. Convention is available for those that want it and non-convention is a perfectly acceptable avenue for those that would like to create something new and unique. I enjoy offering my expertise and guidance while letting couples – gay or not – determine the structure of their ceremony.
If you’re looking for a northern New Mexico wedding celebrant for your gay destination wedding, I’m here to help!
